8. 21 Sarfarosh Saragarhi 1897

A war drama set in the time of saas bahu serials is a nice shift for Indian audiences. The series is focused on the lives of the 21 brave soldiers who fought the 10,000-strong Afghan tribesmen till their last breath.

Although the cinematography is breath taking, with the scenes capturing the rocky terrains of Leh masked as the North-West Frontier Province, the scale of production doesn’t match the larger-than-life story being told. The subject is a nice change from the soap operas on the small screen and the storyline leaves you wanting more from the very first episode. The actors take the cake as they render wonderful performances of heroic characters.

7. Stories by Rabindranath Tagore

Stories by Rabindranath Tagore’ is based in the early twentieth century of the undivided Bengal. They are set in a politically volatile period in Calcutta where the protagonists pour in from their diverse rural, social and cultural backgrounds to encourage and uplift a whole new world.

It’s noticed that Tagore portrayed his women characters as fierce women who would almost always stand up against the family and the social rules. The show showcases some Tagore’s best stories including ‘Binodini’, ‘Charulata’, ‘Atithi’ and ‘Kabuliwala’.

6. The Little Things- Season 2

The Little Things-Indian Netflix Series

Contrary to what you might have heard, Little Things has always been a mature show; and now its characters have caught up with it.

It’s a show that has never let the greed of making a commercial show affect what it is intrinsically about – a young couple, struggling to adjust to independent life, burdened with more money than they’ve ever seen and terrified that one day, it’ll all go away.  It’s a show that has, despite a major change behind-the-scenes, maintained a singular focus to tell the stories of very specific characters to a varied audience.

Since the show is light hearted, the major work is done by the two protagonists- Sehgal and Parkar. The two have made the series extremely easy going and relatable and have truly made the script come to life. This is another popular Indian Netflix series.

5. Wild Wild Country

Wild Wild Country follows the saga of the spiritual leader, Rajneesh (also known as OSHO) in captivating ways, through historical footage as well as sit-down interviews with his followers.

Rajneesh preached to his followers about the idea of creating awakened people who live in harmony with their surroundings. But his cult also forced members to donate large quantities of money, while creating an isolated community that kept tight control over its members.

The Netflix documentary doesn’t show this, but Win McCormack, who wrote about the cult in the 1980s, points out in “The New Republic” that Rajneesh’s followers were encouraged to get sterilised or have abortions. Rajneesh was just one of many cult leaders who have captivated — and horrified — people throughout history.

4. Powder

Powder--Indian Netflix Series

Powder, a show bolder than Sacred Games came out in the year 2010. But many TV operators didn’t consider the show worthy of being aired on prime time tv. Thus Netflix took to showing this progressive show on its medium and it is honestly one of the best shows of its time.

Powder is an understated police procedural related show with Naved Ansari, the drug kingpin whose ghost-like presence certifies that there is no dirt available about him. The storyline of Powder is entrapped in the underbelly of Mumbai, with coexisting humanity and brutality. Powder’s characters reflect cinematic skill, depth, and complexity through which the show addressed the larger issues of the time.

3. Delhi Crime

Delhi Crime is based on the horrific gang rape case of 2012- Nirbhaya. The capital suffered extremely as it was renamed the ‘Rape Capital of the World’. Contrary to shows that depict the victim’s perspective, Delhi Crime was told from the perspective of the police – which is both refreshing and problematic.

The Delhi Police, like most law enforcement organisations around the world, is burdened by a reputation as complicated as that of the city it serves to protect. A lot was written about its handling of the case – it was praised for having nabbed the culprits in a matter of days and filing a detailed charge sheet that was instrumental in their sentencing, but it was also questioned about its ability to prevent such crimes, and criticised for letting redtapism get in the way of the investigation.

A gruelling show that slaps its viewers with the reality of living in India. Delhi Crime is a must watch!

2. Ghoul

A mini-series that launched soon after Sacred Games’ massive success, Ghoul is a show set in the future. Through vivid images and symbols the show gets us accustomed to words like ‘anti national’ and ‘terrorist’ – Ghoul reveals itself to be a surprisingly potent show.

It isn’t merely a critique of modern India – nor is it just a cautionary tale of where we might be headed – but it is a takedown, it’s a slap in the face. Ghoul’s storyline attacks pointed politics, religious rivalries and demonic presences.  The trailers had positioned it as a supernatural horror programme and the show does justice to it. A very popular Indian Netflix series

1. Sacred Games

Undoubtedly the best of the best Indian Netflix Series, Sacred Games is a must watch for all viewers. Set in Mumbai, Sacred Games investigates the city’s intricate web of organized crime, corruption, politics and espionage that lie beneath India’s economic renaissance.

It is an epic masterpiece of richness and power that interlaces the lives of the privileged, the famous, the wretched and the bloodthirsty. Roles played by some phenomenal actors such as Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddique, the show is made even more realistic. It is not for the weak hearted as the show contains graphic and gory images but the storyline and impeccable acting will keep you glued to the very end.
