Marwari weddings are considered to be one of the most elaborate weddings. Celebrated with a lot of excitement. They are colourful and grand. An authentic marwari wedding has many rituals which needs to be followed for the wedding to be considered by the society. It comes all the way from the Vedas and the great Indian Sears.

However today many people think that these rituals are nothing but a waste of time. But frankly these quaint rituals actually make a marwadi wearing a grand celebration.

BYAH HAATH

Pre-wedding rituals

This is one such ritual that takes place separately at the bride and the groom‘s house. It is a form of get-together where friends and family sing songs of love, happiness and purity which is also known as Mangal Geet.

Main purpose of this ceremony is to give blessings to the bride and groom respectively by the already married couples. This function usually happens seven days before the W-day.

Just as unique as the name is, this ritual is also fun and unique. On this particular day, the parents of both bride and groom reach the maternal uncle aunt’s house to formally invite them for the wedding. The uncle and aunt are supposed to show us some tantrums while the parents are supposed to just be patient.

In marwadi wedding, the presence of maternal uncle and aunt are considered of significant role. This is one of the reasons why this ritual is also a very important part of the pre-wedding celebrations.

NAANDI GANESH PUJA

NAANDI GANESH PUJA

As the name suggests, this Puja is performed to invite Lord Ganesh and his family for blessings. People hope that the grace of Lord Ganesha will bring happiness and love between the bride and groom.

A small boy dressed as Lord Ganesha arrives at the wedding place. The boy is well treated and is offered a variety of scrumptious food delicacies like Laddoo, Pedda, jaggery and many more.

LADIES’ SANGEET

LADIES’ SANGEET

This ceremony is a fun and exciting one where only ladies are allowed however many boys try to snooping. The ceremony is usually from the bright side where all the ladies of the house get together to dance and sing. This ceremony is truly a merry making ceremony. It’s candid and fun.

Women of the house dress as men and act like them, showcasing a stereotypical man and making fun of their respective partners. They gossip, eat, dance and have lots of fun.

The main reason for this function is to celebrate the freedom of a woman, performing activities which she might not be allowed to do after marriage.

MEHENDI

MEHENDI

Just like the name suggests, this ceremony is mainly for the friends and family. The ladies of the house dye their hands in Heena with beautiful patterns in floral prints. The bride gets long heavy prints on your hand with Heena and also gets the husband’s name written somewhere.

This is one of the most controversial Marwari wedding rituals. In the modern day many people are against this particular ceremony. Under this ceremony the maternal family has to offer expensive and exclusive gifts to the Groomside with the request to accept their girl.

TEL BAAN

TEL BAAN

In this ceremony, the bride and groom separately take a shower in all. It sounds very unique and the concept is actually exclusive. A mixture of milk, curd, olive, mustard oil, Haldi is made and applied on the hands and feet face of the bride and groom separately.

This Function is indeed the most enjoyable and exciting one. Where families and friends all together play a song of Holi.

After TEEL BAAN, The groom gets ready for his Bharat. Bharat is a formal way of entering the wedding location. The groom with his family and friends dance, sing and enter the wedding location.

Once the bride and groom meet, the VAR MALA ritual is formed where both of them exchange flower garlands and rings. After they head over for the Perehs.

Marwari weddings include Ashirvad, Joota chupai, many more exciting and fun games which make the ceremony elaborate and a grand one.
