“Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.” The United Nations

On 11th December 2014, the 21st of June was announced as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations. The main aim of this is to spread awareness of the innumerable benefits one can gain from practising yoga.

India proposed and received endorsement from a record 175 member states for the draft resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga. The proposal was initially presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly.

In his address, Mr Modi highlighted the legacy of yoga and its ancient traditions, representing the unification of mind and body, thought and action.
